SEPTEMBER 2008

Last Meetings
Our annual Traditional Corn Boil was held on Sunday, August 24th. Thirty-five people attended including some guests from the Antique Automobile Club of Ottawa. Fresh from the Family Picnic and Normoska, Bill and Marilyn were bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and simply "Rarin' to go" and, as always, were the perfect hosts at this long-standing event. A short tour had been scheduled but a few sharp rain showers plus the overall desire of the gathering to just sit in comfort and socialize, resulted in that activity being put to one side. AACO members, Philip and Lynn de St. Jorre entertained us with several 78 RPM records played on their vintage windup gramophone. The main and most important part of the day, namely eating, quickly took the place of the tour. The corn was boiled, the hot dogs grilled, and all were enjoyed along with salads, drinks and desserts - non-calorific of course. A highlight of the event, for this writer at least (being a Buick man), was to see Blair and Laura Prior arrive in their newly restored 1940 Buick sedan. Blair's 1950 Chev was also there, driven by Don and Judy Lampkin of the Maitland Valley Region. Many thanks to Bill and Marilyn for again hosting this most enjoyable event, to those who brought the great selection of goodies and especially, to all those who attended to make the event the success that it was.

On Sunday, September 14th, we took part in the annual "Discovery Tour" of artists' studios, artisans' workshops and nurseries of North Gower and Kars, our event hosted by Ted and Isabella Fiander. Although the day was cloudy and threatening, the rain held off. We met at the Brunstad Christian Church, point #1 of the tour, where lunch was available and descriptive pamphlets with maps were passed out. This allowed each participant, driving independently of the others, to choose sites of personal interest to visit. There were 12 stops, all located within a 17km by 14km area, which featured a wide variety of exhibits to choose from. The tour ended at the Swan on the Rideau, an English style pub and restaurant where we enjoyed a roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings, along with various beverages (high and low test) and dessert. The Swan was built in the late 1960's by the Bond family as a manor for the nearby marina. The authentic post and beam construction is a replication of original buildings in England and the beams and timbers in the structure are over 100 years old. For its first 15 years, the Swan was known as the Rideau Manor but, in 1987, it was converted to the well-known pub that it is today. Many thanks to all who participated. We hope that you enjoyed your day.
